Cycle 1 Enrichment Day

Posted 26th November 2024

After a successful inaugural Enrichment Day in the last few weeks of the previous academic year, it was decided that Enrichment Days would continue to be a feature of the Dixons McMillan calendar every cycle. Enrichment Day is a great opportunity for students to take part in a range of activities led by our heads of department on rotation each cycle.

This cycle, we had a range of different activities for each of our year groups to take part with:

  • Year 7 students had a day run by the Art department. They were visited by the Peace Museum for an exciting workshop based on the history of different peace movements. They then went to the Impressions Gallery for a workshop on Bradford before embarking on a trail through Bradford.
  • Year 8 students had a day run by Computing. They took part in a number of different activities about coding and video games development. They learnt more about Caesar ciphers and used their own to decrypt a trail through Horton Park
  • Year 9 students had a day run by the Spanish department. They all visited the Pictureville Cinema at the National Science and Media Museum to watch Zipi y Zape, an animated Spanish comedy film before returning to the academy for tapas at Family Dining. They then had a go at creating their own comic strips based on Zipi y Zape and testing out their language skills in a different context.
  • Year 10 students had a day run by the English department, focused on their studies of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. They watched a modern adaptation of the book, before then taking part in workshops about the novella. These included using their amateur dramatic skills to act out scenes from the book and creating their own Victorian Christmas cards, along with a visit from Reverend Gayle to discuss the 'true' meaning of Christmas.
  • Year 11 students had a day focused around their next steps beyond secondary school. They visited Dixons Sixth Form Academy for a tour, followed by workshops at Valley Parade from Bradford City Community Foundation. In the afternoon they had talks about life as a student at New College Bradford and from the British Army regarding the different routes into the Armed Forces.

Thank you to all staff and external providers who helped to make this cycle's Enrichment Day so successful - we're looking forward to next Cycle 2!
